“Stolen Memories,” the title of this novel by Darrell Standing, has not been casually plucked from the dozens of romantic phrases we absorb from the love songs that float in our heads. Emma Wilson is dying, and her resultant memory loss causes her even more despair than the mounting pain and debilitation she is suffering. By chance, an old and dear boy friend, Mark Bennett, who is a practicing psychologist at the Portland hospital where Emma is a patient, has been assigned to her case.Mark is the seminal figure in the story, a rather pedantic young man whose friends seem to encourage his role as a “walking encyclopedia.” This habit alone might account for there being no love interest in his life. As the story opens, however, a beautiful colleague--Lea--is determined to do something about that. Then, unexpectedly, Emma enters the picture. Lea, too, rediscovers an old love and then there is Mark's sister Kate, Emma's oldest, dearest friend, who is in love with a concert violinist named Lucy.
These young Portlanders are really very well meaning, well educated, and well dressed young professionals, who seem to have gotten a lot out of reading “Sophie's World” and eating “tasty” food with the right wine, and the reader will soon become quite involved with their romances, but—and this is no spoiler because the reader should be aware of it from the start—this book is the first of a series.
Perhaps I should have seen it coming, but a few minutes into a scene where something very traumatic has happened and Kate tells us that “The most important thing about love is to endure,” I flipped my kindle page and read

Had I read Standing's page on Amazon I would have known that this book is the first in a series, but unprepared, the abrupt stop was very annoying.
Romance novels require a lot of involvement on the part of the reader. In this brave new world of serialized everything, bookreview.com warns the reader that “Stolen Memories” will require an “enduring love.”

Stolen Memories edition by Darrell Standing Contemporary Romance eBooks Reviews
The book starts as every other story, with a meeting of two young people, Mark and Lea, who are a little shy and not very experienced in relationships. Gradually, they find a way to each other and fall in love. The turn comes when Emma appears in the story. Suddenly, an ordinary story turns into a powerful one full of emotions, beautiful dialogues and infinite truths about life. Author’s style is fresh, dynamic, without pointless boring passages. The characters are credible and each has its singular charm. I warmly recommend it to everyone! Be careful, you won’t be able to avoid tears. It’s a pity that the sequel is not yet in stores.
The story of Mark, a therapist of patients with incurable illness will touch your hearth. Even though the storyline leads the reader to his new relationship with Lea, third person complicates the love story of two people. I don’t want to reveal the story, I just state that fate can sometimes be unpredictable. We can plan even the smallest detail, but life can always surprise you. Sometimes we are happy about it, sometimes we grieve. Not less interesting, even though depicted in less detail, are life stories of minor characters, for example Mark’s sister Kate. Excellently interpreted story, natural dialogues and inspiring reflections. Everyone who had some experience with severe illness will find a bit of his story in this book. I do not know if the writer was inspired by reality. In any case, this story is unbelievably believable.
I loved the story. We've all had a first love and that special one you give everything to. Even a chance to reunite with them. The heart wrenching story told in this book is very well written. It's one that you can easily put yourself in. I loved the characters and truly got caught up in their situations. I smiled and cried and remembered along with them. This book gives you a hint of what could be and what might have been. The journey you take in this story is well worth the travel. I am anxiously chomping to get book 2. Well told story Darrell!!!!! BrAvo. Highly recommended.
When I first downloaded this book, I thought it would be an interesting little break from my usual readings of sci-fi and fantasy. However, I had no idea that I would become so engrossed by a story that was so insightful and moving. Often times, I found myself becoming so involved that I would completely shut out the world around me (so much so that I left the rump roast in the oven far too long, much to my families dismay and had to end up ordering in). What touched me so deeply and made me connect with this story was how easy it was to relate to the characters and what they were feeling. I found myself being able to see myself in the different character's shoes...feeling their joys along with their pains. I laughed, I smiled and I cried, but most importantly I understood where they were coming from and it made me love them all the more. We never know what life has in store for us. More often than not, there are many turns that we would have never expected or could have ever planned for that change us. I think Darrell Standing did a great job at conveying this in a way that anyone could understand. It is not every day that you find a book that makes you really take a moment to think about life, but this story did exactly that. It made me remember how important it is to not only live in the moment, but to enjoy it and cherish it, as well. I am eagerly waiting book 2 to see what turns life will take next for Lea and Mark.
I believe that we are all on a journey and memories play a key role in that journey. There can be a double edged sword here because memories can both shape who we are and keep us trapped in the past. Author Darrell Standing has written a very poignant book that looks at some of these ideas through the lives of three characters in his "Stolen Memories". Lea, Mark, and Emma also are on their own journeys that involve memories but their paths intersect and this is what makes for a compelling story. There is some great dialogue here and some wonderful insights about life. I can't wait for the next release in the "Hope" series.
