Twisted Andrew E Kaufman Books
Twisted is a roller coaster ride for the mind. I never saw the next sharp curve or major drop coming as the intensity heightened from page to page, chapter to chapter. Dr. Christopher Kellan is assigned to delve into the mind of a new patient, Donny Ray Smith, suspected serial killer. From the first paragraph, until The End, Andrew E. Kaufman weaved and twisted his characters and their story in an amazing direction. I only know that with each page I found myself wanting more and Mr. Kaufman did NOT disappoint. I was fortunate to win a pre-released Kindle copy of Twisted. Once I began reading, stopping was out of the question. I finished the novel at 3:00am this past Saturday morning. I actually had to stop and take a breath. I found Twisted completely captivating. A psychological thriller at its finest.Tags : Amazon.com: Twisted (9781477829486): Andrew E. Kaufman: Books,Andrew E. Twisted Andrew E Kaufman Books Reviews
Christopher is a psychiatrist working at a psychiatric hospital with the most deranged serial killers you could imagine. When a new patient arrives at the hospital, Christopher is asked to make a diagnosis on whether he thinks the patient is lying about not remembering the crimes he committed, or whether he has a genuine psychiatric condition that prevents him from remembering them. When he initially meets the patient, the patient looks familiar, but he can pinpoint why. The more time he spends with the patient, the more he is put on edge. His patient, Donny, seems to know more about him than he should, but Christopher doesn’t know why.
As odd things start happening around him, Christopher questions whether he himself is going insane the same way his schizophrenic father did…is he losing his mind, or is that just what Donny wants him to think? In order to catch a serial killer, Christopher may end up losing his grip on reality.
Twisted is by far the most trippy book I’ve ever read. I felt like I was going crazy when I was reading it. I can tell the author put a lot of time and effort into his research into schizophrenia, because throughout the book, I couldn’t grasp on to anything solid. My thoughts were all over the place, and I think it was this amazing experience where the book made me feel as confused and panicked as Christopher must have felt, and I’ve never felt that way reading a book before.
I did guess the twist from very early on, but it was executed flawlessly, and I loved the ride getting there, and really enjoyed seeing how all of the pieces of the puzzle fit together in the end. Donny was such a creepy character, that I felt tense reading parts of the book with him in it. I imagine working with real life serial killers would feel the same way.
Overall, this book was dark, twisty, and will make you question everything as you’re reading it. You’ll be confused and lost, and that’s exactly what Andrew E. Kaufman wants you to feel. Fans of books or movies like Inception, The Nightwalker, or Shutter Island will eat this book up! This was the first book I read by Kaufman, but it will not be my last. This was a smart, taught thriller, and I can’t wait to read more by this author! If you’re ready for a wild ride of a psychological thriller, be sure to pick this one up!
I've never read any of Andrew Kaufman's books. But the description of Twisted made me curious. All I can say is "wow". I had a feeling something wasn't right in Christopher's mind within the first few chapters, but I had no idea the author would take me on such a wild ride. I am still reeling over how this novel ends. Absolutely fantastic writing and an amazing novel. Everyone should read!!!
Twisted, is what every novelist wants his or her book to be.
It impacts the reader right away. You care for Christopher, and his family from page one. You want them to be okay. Safe.
But what Andrew E Kaufman does is take the reader and the family on a journey. I won't tell plot, it's too good to give anything away. This book is like Alfred Hitchcock on paper. Enjoy the ride, but don't pause too long or you might get lost in the mazes prepared for you. Yes it's TWISTED. SO WILL YOU NIGHTMARES BE.
The book kept me interested enough to keep me reading, but I finished with a sense of unsatisfaction. The "twist" ending really wasn't that much of a twist, and was kind of a let down. I think the author should have delved more into the history and the psyche of the character after the events finally unfolded. I was left confused and... bored honestly. I think the author had a great premise, and I think it was a challenge to attempt to write from the POV that he did. The beginning of the story was great, but about 1/2 through it started to fizzle for me. It wasn't so much of a surprise ending so much of an "I figured" ending for me. I think the author could have spent a great deal more time on character development. Especially with his wife and son. I do not buy for a moment that a woman could be so 2 dimensional of a charcter. I think he needed to spend more time on the relationship between him and his friend, Adam, because again, I did not buy their relationship being so strong during all the turmoil. And I think he needed to spend more time on his relationship with his son. I guess, what I'm trying to say, is the book would have been great at about 150 pages longer. The premise was great, but the writing was a bit of a let down for me.
I had to stop reading this early on. The use of graphic, and to my mind unnecessary, images placed at regular intervals to remind the reader how twisted the bad guy is was just too much. I can't read Patricia Cornwell for the same reason. The narrative should have been enough to paint the picture. If you enjoy gratuitous images of horrible things placed just to shock and do nothing to advance the narrative, this book is for you.
